Who invented French dip sandwich? It has been discussed in L.A. for more than several decades.

Both of Cole’s and Philippe’s swear they are the first, and the rivalry between them never stops.

But me, I don’t care about it as long as they serve a good sandwich. And here, I am introducing Cole’s as a local recommended me. (It doesn’t mean I support Cole’s over that discussion).

It is located in Downtown and their historical building and vibes give you nice time.

How Was French Dip Sandwich Born? -Cole’s Story-

Cole’s is the oldest public house in Los Angeles.

It used to be a hub for the train station, so many people stopped by before leaving to grab their sandwich.

One day, a guy came to Cole’s who had just gotten a dental treatment. Thus he were not able to chew the sandwich which was tough.

Then he asked the chef if he could do something to make sandwich easy to eat. So the chef dipped the bread in the jus to make it soften. This is the moment the French Dip Sandwich was born.

Other people like that style as well, hence Cole’s has kept that on their menu since then.

The French Dip Sandwich

All French dip sandwiches are served with a small cup of salty brown beef broth at Cole’s. You may make yourself dip it or not.

The bread is prepared through the evening by a bakery chef and will have a pile of meat inside. Your options are Pork, Pastrami, Usda Prime Beef, Turkey and Lamb, and the size is really generous. Hence for girls, skinny dip (half sandwich)  is recommended.

The recommended one is the Pastrami Dip with additional swiss cheese (sharp cheddar, pepper jack, goat or blue cheese are also available). This is just amazing and fill you so easily.

The Cocktails

There is a nice bar inside and the seats at the bar counter are always good. The friendly bartender entertains you with nice conversations.

The signature cocktail is the Old Fashioned and Cole’s sells a lot of selections such as sugar cube, lemon peel, cherry, Bourbon. They are served on tap and they are high quality.

Some menu are changed every few months and new recipes are keep coming.

You can have all drinks at only 6USD at Happy Hours (Mon, Wed – Fri: 15:00 – 19:00, Tue: All day). You can not miss it.

Other Menus You Should Try

Only the Sandwich itself is enough to fill you, but there are another good menus you should check.

Firstly, the spicy garlic fries and tater-tots are recommended as sides. Make the sandwich half size and try them. I am sure everyone will love them.

If you still have room for the dessert, Bourbon Pecan pie will be a good choice. Please get the ice cream on it. They will have a great harmony together and are so rich.
