There are 3 main races in Singapore, and they make up the Singapore population. They are Chinese, Malay and Indian. This is why Singapore has so many options for foods.

In this article, I am going to introduce a famous restaurant which is located in the heart of Singapore, Bugis. It is called Hjh (Ha-jjah) Maimunah.

Hjh Maimunah is a place where you can get traditional Malay cuisines and based on my experiences, I would highly recommend tourists from all over the world who wishes to venture and explore food!

This restaurant offers a huge variety of authentic Malay dishes as well as mouth-watering ‘kuih’(a bite-sized snack) and desserts.

How to Order

This is where you choose your sides, which usually come with rice. You can simply point out the staffs attending to you on which items you’d like. Not to worry, if you’re unsure of what the items are, please feel free to approach them and inquire about the dish!

The food they serve ranges from an average of $9.00 for a basic lunch set! Do bear in mind that the more items you take, the more the cost of your meal.

Warning, some dishes are really spicy! For those of you who don’t have the ability to endure spicy food, please inform the staff serving you.

(The more red in colour the gravy is, the more spicy it is! Well, that’s what I experienced most of the time)

Recommended Menu

Here are the dishes that I would recommend from my experiences dining in here:

1) Plain rice (This is a must!)

2) Siput sedut (this can be spicy to some! You have to suck the snails out of the shells to taste the richness of the meat inside those snail shells! It comes with a gravy called KuahLemak)

3) Bagedil (Potato balls, these are my all time favourite!)

4) Sambal goreng (A very famous side-dish in the Malay local cuisine, a mixture of square sized toufu, tempe and vegetables)

5) Ayam Bakar of Ikan Bakar (Grilled chicken or grilled fish, and again this can be spicy to some especially with the black chilli)

6) Tahu Telur (Has a very sweet & spicy taste to each bite! It’s what they called toufu with egg fillings!)

7) Mixed vegetables (Be sure to keep the healthy choices when you plan your meal!)

Traditional Malay Drinks

Be sure to order traditional Malay drinks which includes TehTarik (Milk Tea) to Ice Milo (Iced chocolate drink) or even a refreshing Kopi O (Black coffee) to enjoy with a meal on a hot day especially in Singapore’s all-year summer weather.

Don’t be surprised! You even order from HjhMaimunah directly on their website (Hjh Maimunah) or on different intermediary platforms like (Caterspot), where both needs pre-advanced orders and have a minimum value.

This is best if you order for events, or for lunch meeting or even a family gathering!

Fret not! If you feel like having lunch on the spot, platforms like (Deliveroo) which offers on demand food services and have your food delivered right to your doorstep! (Do take note deliveries can only be done for customers residing around the neighborhood)
